Unit FLP.1: Farmland Protection
This unit introduces you to the issue of farmland protection. It describes how farmland is defined and why farmland is valued. It also reviews several threats that could cause land uses to be converted from agricultural to other types of uses. This unit does not cover farmland protection activities that are ongoing in Michigan, nor does it review tools and techniques for farmland protection. Future units in this module will provide that information.
 
Learning Objectives
At the end of this unit, the learner should be able to recognize why farmland protection is an important policy issue in Michigan. In order to meet this objective, the learner should be able to:
  • Recognize what is meant by farmland
  • Identify values of farmland
  • Identify threats to farmland
  • Describe status and trends for Michigan farmland
